Back in 2011 a chance conversation in Danang, Vietnam lead me to be introduced to Vietnam’s AFL team the Vietnam Swans and their then president Phil Johns. Since then Phil has taken time each year to meet with the students in Ho Chi Minh City to talk about the Vietnam swans, life as an expat of 12 years in Vietnam and most recently about his role as the Executive Director of the Australian Chamber of Commerce Vietnam (AUSCHAM).
This year Phil was joined by Tim Clements (also a Vietnam Swans player), an entrepreneur who owns five businesses in Vietnam and gave an insight into working and setting up a variety of business in Vietnam working privately and for government.
As part of the discussions Phil and Tim also outlined the role the Vietnam Swans play in supporting charities in Vietnam and Australia. Notably in Vietnam they support the Vungtau Orphanage and also Swim Vietnam which teaches children to swim, an important organisation given 26,000 children died from drowning in Vietnam last year.
I am very proud to say that through Western Sydney’s connection with the GWS GIANTS AFL team we were able to present Tim Clements from the Vietnam swans with a signed GWS Giants jersey. The jersey will be auctioned at the Vietnam Swans 2016 ANZAC Day match to support the charity work of the Swans.
